Description

CLOSING NIGHT

They’re still the same romantic, articulate and gorgeous couple that met on a train in Linklater’s Before Sunrise (1995), but now, nearly 20 years on, Jesse and Céline (Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy) are approaching middle age and facing questions of commitment, family and, as ever, the staying power of love. Before Midnight, with a funny and touching screenplay cowritten by Linklater and his two lead actors, is that rare sequel (rarer still: a sequel to a sequel) that not only delivers the charm and energy of its antecedents but adds layers of poignancy, standing firmly on its own as a mature observation of love’s pleasures and discontents.
-Peter Stein

Additional Information

Richard Linklater

Born in Houston in 1960 and now a stalwart of the American independent film world, Richard Linklater burst onto the American independent scene with his no-budget hit Slacker (SFIFF 1991), an affectionate satire of American youth culture. His often offhand directorial style belies the careful plotting and prescient casting that characterize his best work. Among his 17 feature films are 1993’s Dazed and Confused (costarring then unknowns Ben Affleck and Matthew McConaughey); School of Rock (2003); the documentary Fast Food Nation (2006); A Scanner Darkly (2006); and Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004), both starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.
